PROFILE ::: Lisa Furno

Mum's Going Away Dress, #1, dress, silk cord, sterling silver, (courtesy Lisa Furno)
Lisa Furno cut up her mother's going away dress and stitched the patterned retro ruby flowers into 10 wearable necklaces. The bold floral designs are a sweet throw-back to pastime, and they make a nice comment on sustainable material and trend. Furno's necklace each come with a tag attached, showing an old photograph of the designer's then-youthful mother wearing the going away dress.

It would be difficult to purchase one of these necklaces, as they seem embedded in maternal sentimentality. Perhaps more than other mediums, fabric and textiles tend to have a quality of the 'sentimental'. This has to do with their role in the everyday, and it is quite impossible to extricate memory or meaning from them, particularly when they transfer to a different context (for example the classification of 'art' or object design).

Furno's retro-esque necklaces are somewhat sedate compared to the designer's other playful creations that hang like miniature toy-like lands.
